Generate Video Clips and Frames

What are clips and frames?

In order to annotate video data, the video will first need to be converted to frames of individual images. You can generate both clips (shorter segments of a video) and frames through the Videos tab of a datasource.
Go to the Videos tab of your datasource with your video data
Click on the video you want to edit to open it in the video player
Note about data storage:
For viewing purposes, clips and frames generated from videos hosted on cloud sources (GCS and AWS) will be listed under their respective cloud source. However, the data itself will be stored in a bucket created by Plainsight. Private cloud users can find the clips and frames data stored in the <PROJECT_ID>_plainsight_uploads bucket of their cloud environment.
Plainsight web users will have their clips and frames data stored in Plainsight managed cloud storage. The data will count towards their allocated storage.

Creating a Clip

You may want to only generate frames from a small section of the video rather than the whole segment. This is where video clipping comes in. Clipping is completely optional and a user may choose to generate frames from their entire video.
Video player view
    1.
Create a clip of the video data by clicking "Create Clips from Video"
    2.
Click "Add Clip" to select your segment.
    3.
Enter a start and end time, OR select the segment on the video player itself using the blue slider on the timeline.
    4.
Optionally, click "Add Clip" to specify additional segments for clipping.
    5.
    Click "Create Clips"
The Processing Log will show clip generation progress. When complete, you can view the clips under the "Clips" tab.

Creating Frames for Labeling

Once you have a clip of the segment you want to label, it's time to convert it into frames.
    1.
Open the video or clip you want to generate frames from
    2.
    Click "Create Frames from Video"
    3.
You have the option to create frames at a specific rate, or create a specific number of randomly spaced frames. Select the desired option, then click "Create Frames"
Your frames will be generated and will appear in the "Video Frames" tab. The Processing Log will show frame generation progress.
The video frames are automatically added to the Labeler for labeling.

Browser Compatibility

For a list of supported file types, see Supported File Formats.
Uploaded videos are converted to mp4 and are playable in most modern browsers.
Videos that are synced from cloud sources (Amazon S3 and Google Cloud Storage) are not converted, and as a result, some video formats are not playable or available for clipping in certain browsers. You may want to convert these videos to mp4 if you wish to view or clip them within Plainsight. Frame generation is supported regardless of the browser's video playback capability.
Here are the common browsers and compatible actions for video files that are synced from cloud sources:
